Product Description

Application of Thermal Spraying Technology in the Metallurgical Industry

Thermal spraying technology originated in the early part of this century. Initially, molten metal was simply atomized into a liquid stream by compressed air and sprayed onto the surface of the substrate to form a film-like coating. The core of thermal spraying technology lies in the spray temperature, the impact velocity of the molten droplets on the substrate surface, and the properties of the materials used to form the coating. Throughout its entire development, thermal spraying technology has essentially advanced along these three key directions. Both temperature and velocity depend on the specific heat source and equipment design. In a sense, the higher the temperature and the greater the velocity, the more favorable it is for producing high-quality coatings—this has led to a dynamic interplay of competition and coordination between these two critical factors throughout the technology’s evolution. Another significant advantage of thermal spraying technology is the wide variety of spray materials available, enabling even the most challenging surfaces to be transformed—from ordinary metals into high-performance materials, or from brittle substrates into highly durable ones. It is precisely these three key factors, along with numerous other controllable influencing variables, that make thermal spraying a truly unique technology with synergistic effects. Thermal spraying allows for the precise design of a diverse range of modified surfaces, opening up broad applications—from routine mechanical repairs to cutting-edge fields such as aerospace and bioengineering. Recently, at the 14th International Thermal Spraying Conference held in Kobe, Japan, the automotive, metallurgical, and energy industries were identified as the three major themes for deepening the application and focused development of thermal spraying technology, signaling new trends in the expansion of its use.
